Text to QR code generator

Type or paste any message and this free text to QR code generator turns it into a scannable code instantly. Use it for short notes, coupon codes, serial numbers, or instructions that need to work without a link.

How to create a text QR code

  1. Open the Text tab. On the QR code generator, choose Text from the type selector to switch the form to a single message box.
  2. Type or paste your message. Enter the note, code, or instructions you want to show when the code is scanned. Punctuation and line breaks are preserved.
  3. Watch the character count. The counter shows how much room is left. Shorter messages produce simpler codes that scan more reliably from a distance.
  4. Check the live preview. The QR code redraws as you type, so you can confirm it looks correct before you download anything.
  5. Download PNG or SVG. Use PNG for screens and chat, or SVG when you plan to print the code at a large size. Nothing is uploaded.

What a text QR code actually stores

A text QR code holds a plain string rather than a web address. When someone scans it, their camera app shows the text directly, with no browser, no website, and no network connection required.

Because the message lives inside the code itself, the data never changes and the code never stops working, which makes it a reliable choice for anything you print once and leave in place.

Good uses for a plain text QR code

Text codes are handy for event wristbands, equipment labels, and asset tags where you want a fast, self contained identifier. They also work well for offline puzzles, scavenger hunts, and classroom activities.

You can use a text code for coupon codes, Wi-Fi free zones, serial numbers, or a short instruction such as “remove the seal before use”. Anything that fits in the message box will scan.

Text QR code vs URL QR code

Choose a text code when you want to display information with no destination. Choose a URL code when you want the extra detail, formatting, and media that a web page can hold.

If you want to change the message later or count how many people scan it, use a URL code that points at a fewly short link instead. A plain text code cannot be edited once printed.

Keep the code easy to scan

The longer the message, the denser the pattern becomes. Very long text still works, but the squares get smaller, so test the printed size from the distance people will actually scan it.

Leave a clear margin around the code, keep strong contrast between the dark modules and the light background, and avoid printing it too small on busy backgrounds.

Private by default

Every code on this page is generated in your browser. The text you type is never sent to a server, logged, or stored, so nothing sensitive leaves your device.

That means you can safely encode internal notes, serial numbers, or short messages without worrying about where the data ends up.

Frequently asked questions

How much text can a QR code hold?
This tool accepts up to 1200 characters. Shorter messages produce simpler codes that scan more reliably from a distance.
Does a text QR code need the internet to work?
No. The message is encoded inside the code itself, so it displays instantly when scanned, even with no connection.
Is the text to QR code generator free?
Yes. It is completely free, requires no account, and adds no watermark to the PNG or SVG you download.
Can I include line breaks or emoji in my text?
Line breaks and emoji are supported. Very long or emoji heavy messages increase the density, so keep the code reasonably large when you print it.
Can I change the text after printing the code?
No. A text code is static, so the content is fixed. If you need an editable message, use a URL code that points at a short link you can update later.
Which app scans a text QR code?
The built-in camera app on iPhone and Android reads it, along with most messaging and scanning apps. No special app is needed.
